How to sell your home this winter

It’s gloomy outside, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait till spring to sell your home. It’s a seller’s market and if you play your cards right you can be in your new home before the summer.

If you want to sell your house in Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles, Rickmansworth, Beaconsfield or Gerrards Cross this winter, follow our top winter selling tips:

 First impressions count:

It’s all about first impressions – according to property portal Zoopla –

Does your house say “come in” to anyone walking or driving past or does it look rather dark and uninviting? A sprinkling of outside Christmas lights is good, but this is not the time to go over the top with singing snowmen, flashing neon signs and a blow-up father Christmas on the roof.

Keep snow and ice at bay.

Sprinkle a layer of sand over the pavement and steps to ensure your viewer doesn’t end up in A&E instead of crossing your doorstep. If the buyer can’t get in, the house won’t sell. Plant some frost-resistant plants outside to liven things up and consider a pretty festive wreath for the front door.  Again – less is more.

 Keep it warm and cosy:

Keep the house heated during viewings and make the best of natural light – open windows and blinds, push back drapes and turn on the lights in every room before viewers arrive. Replace bulbs with higher wattage to dispel the gloom.

A crackling fire and Christmas tree – of the smaller, stylish variety – and the smell of freshly brewed coffee or baked bread could all help to make your potential viewers feel at home straight away.

Winter is a time of overflowing coat stands and Wellie towers by the door – get rid of any clutter before viewings.  There is a fine line between a cosy, lived in look and chaos. Get it right.

 Create a mood:

Place vases with winter flowers strategically around the house – but don’t overdo it! Fill the bathroom with expensive looking soaps and lotions and plush robes and towels to create a feeling of luxury.

Consider playing soft, background music – think classical or jazz rather than punk rock or Boney M’s Christmas collection.
