02 Nov Christmas events in Buckinghamshire
The area that we cover is a hotbed of social activity. We have summer Feast Days, Literary Festivals, open-air concerts, summer fairs; you name it, we’ve got it.
And we always look forward to Christmas when our area offers some really lovely events to put you in the festive mood. Among our favourites are:
(We couldn’t find dates for all of our favourites – so if you can add to the list, please comment below and we’ll update the post)
We’re lucky to have more than one fabulous National Trust property on our doorstep. Nearby Cliveden, and also Ashridge Estate further afield, are both really family friendly. Which means that come Christmas (or any other major event in the year actually) they put on some fun activities. At Cliveden this year, a trail leads children to discover small presents that Father Christmas has left among the gardens. By following his festive trail children can have a go at the activities on route and pick up little stocking-filler gifts. At Ashridge, children follow a trail to learn about how the wildlife at Ashridge spends its Christmas, answering a quiz along the way and earning themselves a Christmassy reward. The great thing about both is that you don’t need to book, you just turn up.
Christmas Fun Night in Chalfont St Peter
On Friday, 5th December Chalfont St Peter closes the high street to traffic so that the Christmas Fun Night can take place. It’s a long-standing tradition in the village and is organised by the same people who bring us the hugely popular Feast of St Peter in the summer. The marketplace is floodlit for the evening and you’ll be entertained by school choirs singing Christmas carols, as well as the Chalfont Wind Band and Spotlight Musical Theatre. There’s always a kiddies fun fair in the precinct and the majority of shops and businesses stay open for the evening with many putting on special displays, running competitions and giving away food and drink to customers.
On Saturday December 6th Wycombe museum takes us back in time to how the Victorians spent their Christmas. There’s a whole host of activities on offer including having your picture taken in Victorian costume and meeting the cook and laundry maid.
It’s a similar tale over at the Chiltern Open Air Museum where they have special winter opening for a festive Traditional Christmas weekend. You can watch Father Christmas arrive in horse and carriage and visit him in his grotto. The historic buildings will be festooned in traditional Christmas decorations, and open for you to create your own.
This year heralds Watford’s first ever outdoor ice rink – with real ice! The Big Skate in Watford is the first time this town has provided a real ice rink. They advise you to wrap up warm, collect your skates and celebrate in style! The great thing about it is that it’s suitable for all ages.
You may catch sight of the Rotary Club’s musical float playing carols and other Christmas music as it takes Santa to visit the villages of Chalfont St Giles, Chalfont St Peter and Gerrards Cross. Last year, Santra raised over £8,000!
